The job search for digital marketers can be overwhelming.
But if you’re looking for the best jobs, you need to know a lot about the industry, says Jason Stempel, senior digital marketing manager at recruiting firm UpWork.
Stempell says the digital marketing job market is booming, but the job market for traditional media has grown much slower.
Stemspel says traditional media jobs are getting more demanding and are more likely to require digital skills.
Stemedel says the media landscape has changed dramatically since the 1990s, so the jobs for digital media are more of a mix.
He says it’s also becoming harder to find work in digital.
The most common question I get is, ‘What is a digital marketing hire?’
What does digital marketing look like?
It’s like you’re talking to a sales rep.
And they’re a lot more likely than you are to say, ‘Well, this is what a digital hiring manager looks like.’
That’s because they’re more likely and they’re much more focused on that.
The best way to get to know someone is to see what they’ve done in the past and see how they interact with people, says Stemspen.
He suggests hiring someone who has a lot of experience in digital marketing.
Stedman says the best job candidates are those who are passionate about digital.
He recommends getting to know their product, or even their idea, so you can understand how they see it.
But Stemspepper cautions against the typical digital marketing position.
He believes the typical job search begins when someone wants to build their brand.
If they don’t have a strong understanding of what digital marketing is, he says, it can be hard to find a digital job.
“The people that I see in these roles, they’re either very new to digital, they’ve never done a traditional job before, or they have a big business experience and they don, too, but it’s hard to know if they’re the right fit for that,” says Stempepper.
Stempels advice for hiring digital marketing: Know what you’re getting into, know what it takes to make the best of it, and know when to give up, he adds.
Stemeel says a big part of the digital job search is getting to understand your candidate’s strengths and weaknesses.
He encourages candidates to read the company blog posts and follow the job description on their company website.
