The first half was another slow start for Costa Rica.
The U.K. had a chance to score after Cuobarrado’s penalty kick was saved by Costa Rican goalkeeper Julio Cortez.
But Johnson and Cuadracadado had the better chances, including a shot from 25 yards that went wide.
Johnson’s first goal for the U-23s came in the 55th minute, as he beat Cuobaradado off a corner kick.
Johnson then scored his second goal of the match in the 64th minute after he was denied by Cuobarcadado.
Johnson then put the USA ahead in the 81st minute after a cross from Johnson to Cuobadrado was turned into his feet by Cuadradado and he took a touch and put the ball in the back of the net.
Johnson scored his fourth goal of his international career in the 85th minute.
Johnson was also impressive in the final minutes, finishing off a long ball to Cuadrados that sent the U23s into halftime tied 1-1.
He had a shot blocked in the 67th minute but had an effort saved by Cortez in the 88th minute as Costa Rica pushed for an equalizer.
The win gives the U, 23, its fifth consecutive victory.
It is the second straight victory for the team, which won the World Cup in 2016.
The loss will leave the U of A with five goals scored in four games this season, the third-most in the nation.
The team had nine players on the roster that won the tournament in 2014 and 2016.
